When Is the Best Time to Visit Essaouira?
Essaouira can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn generally offer particularly pleasant temperatures for exploring the city and surrounding countryside. Summer is lively, while the Atlantic Ocean keeps the climate cooler than in many inland Moroccan cities. Winter has a quieter atmosphere and is ideal for travellers who prefer to discover Essaouira away from the busier summer season.
How Many Days Should You Stay?
We recommend staying for at least two or three days to discover Essaouira without rushing. This gives you enough time to explore the medina and ramparts, visit the fishing port, walk along the beach, enjoy local restaurants and cafés and, of course, spend a few hours discovering Moroccan cuisine. With four or five days, you can also explore the countryside and villages surrounding the city.
How to Get to Essaouira
Essaouira has an airport located close to the city and is also easily accessible by road from Marrakech, Agadir or Casablanca. Coaches and private transfers regularly connect Essaouira with these cities. The journey from Marrakech is also a wonderful transition between the landscapes of inland Morocco and the Atlantic coast.
Where to Stay
Staying in the medina puts you right at the heart of Essaouira, within easy reach of the souks, port and main places of interest. You will find plenty of riads and small guesthouses here. The neighbourhoods near the beach offer more space and immediate access to the bay. If you prefer peace, nature and a slower pace, the countryside around Essaouira also offers beautiful guesthouses and accommodation surrounded by argan trees.
Getting Around Essaouira
In the medina, your feet are the best means of transport. Distances are short and much of the historic centre is naturally pedestrian-friendly. Small taxis are convenient for reaching the beach, Diabat or other parts of the city. A car becomes particularly useful if you want the freedom to explore the countryside and surrounding area.
What Should You Pack?
Even on sunny days, Essaouira can be windy and evenings may be cooler than you might expect in Morocco. Bring a light jacket or something warm, as well as comfortable shoes for exploring the medina. Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are also useful. And leave a little room in your suitcase: spices, local crafts and regional products often prove difficult to resist.
Should You Book Everything in Advance?
Not necessarily. Part of Essaouira’s charm is having the freedom to be spontaneous. However, it is a good idea to book your accommodation in advance during busy periods, as well as experiences with a limited number of places, particularly small-group activities.
Leave Time for Doing Nothing
A good itinerary in Essaouira should always include a little empty space. Have a coffee on a terrace, watch the fishermen at the port, step into a gallery you discover by chance or simply sit facing the Atlantic. Essaouira often rewards travellers who are willing to slow down.
